my talented friend RYAN BOOTH.

Hey there! Please take some time to read this and vote if you have the time:) My friend ryan is one of the guys I worked with on the coconut records music video contest. and we WON remember! wooooo!

here is a letter from the talented mr ryan booth:

I wanted to take a moment to fill you all in about a film I just shot...

I entered a short film contest called Beyond the Still. It is (what has turned into) the largest collaborative filmmaking experiment/event to date. Essentially the contest is this: A still image was taken by pulitzer prize winning photographer Vincent Laforet, then the still was expanded into a 4 minute short film that then ended on a different still image. This still image kicked off the contest as the starting point for entrants. You download and use his final image as the opening image in your film. You then expand it into a 3-4 minute short film that has to end on a still image and then upload the result. Big time judges (DP from 24, DP from Titanic, Producers of Star Wars, DP from Terminator) select the five best films from the chapter and then present them for popular vote. The film with the most votes wins the chapter. Then their ending still becomes the beginning still of the next chapter. The entire contest will run for 8 total chapters. The first chapter was Vincent's film, the second - sixth chapter are user submitted, and the final chapter is a collaboration between the judges and each of the 6 chapter winners. In other words, if you win the chapter, they fly you to Hollywood to collaborate with the judges(!), Vince, and others to shoot a final, unifying short... Not too shabby. In addition, this contest just won an award at the Cannes festival for advertising. Two awards in fact, including the Golden Lion (like an Academy Award). All that means is that the finale just turned into a pretty big deal. Nice sized budget, professional actors, great press. The resulting "film" (all 8 chapters) will be sewn together and submitted to Sundance, Tribeca, SXSW, and even for consideration at the Academy Awards.

All that to say, my short film (my first narrative effort) was selected by the judges as a finalist for Chapter 5. It is up for consideration (popular vote) as the CH5 winner. Bascially, I am within a day (voting closes tomorrow night) of potentially getting to collaborate on a film headed to Sundance! I am scrounging for as many votes as possible at this point and trying to just get my film in front of as many eyeballs as possible.

I am hooked on narrative filmmaking. I can't tell you how much joy I derived from the process, from collaborating, from writing and creating something to fit within a story arc. I know that this will be a big part of what I do in the future.

My entire goal was finishing! To be in the top 5 has been incredibly validating. My film even beat out one starring Tom Sizemore that was shot with a $10,000 budget... (mine cost less than $100!)

If you personally wanted to vote for my film, that'd be awesome, but no pressure just wanted pass along the information. If you feel doubly comfortable, I'd appreciate you passing the link on! It is a very interesting concept for a contest and we'll all be hearing about it for a while.

Hope all is well!

Thanks,

Ryan

more engagement photo inspiration.

wow. aren't these photos breathtaking!? kelli and sam's engagement photos are some of the sweetest couples shots i've ever seen!i think they are absolutely angelic. when i first saw them i thought they looked like models in a swell catalog. i just love how personal and unique they are. make sure you visit her blog, and take a look at her amazing art.
what i love about this shoot
how pure and innocent it is. i love the sunlight. the grass and cat tails. i love how it reminds me of first love. boy meets girl. love at first sight.

here are a couple questions i asked kelli and she kindly responded. hope this helps all you lovebirds out.

1. is there any advice you have for people looking for a photographer? or for people with a budget? do you think its important to have an engagement shoot?

I love photos...so hiring a good photographer for our wedding and engagement shoot was a must. I have a good friend whose photographic style I love, so I knew right away that I wanted her to shoot us. She is not only super creative, but also very reliable and was more than accomodating in working with our budget.
I don't think everyone HAS to have an engagement shoot, but for us, it was a great excuse to get some awesome photos taken that we would otherwise never do.  With this shoot, it was fun to get creative and try to show a bit of our personalities through the pictures.

2. how did you choose your photographer? did they direct the poses? did you feel awkward?

Erica is a friend, so nothing is really awkward with her! She is really good about capturing the moment without us even knowing she is there.  Those are some of my favorite pictures.....the ones that are natural and un-staged.  But for many of the pictures, yes, she positioned us and thought of creative angles to shoot from.  A little direction in where to look or how to stand is always nice when you are not used to doing it!

3. did you already have a vision of how you wanted the shoot to go? how long did the shoot go on?
I think I ALWAYS have a vision of what I want.  Which can be both a blessing and a curse!  But Erica nailed it.
She told us to bring three changes of clothes and we would bounce around our hometown of Encinitas, CA.  I wanted the pictures to be "close to home"...not somewhere we had never been or that was unfamiliar to Sam and I.  We picked out a few locations we loved...and went from there.  I knew one of the "looks" I wanted to be very soft and romantic.  So I chose a silk ivory dress I made from one of my mom's old nightgowns, and a wire garland crown.  Sam wore a soft grey wool button up and his "go-to" denim pants.  I think out of all our engagement pictures...these turned out to be my favorite.
The other two changes were just "us".  We chose a few of our favorite items and matched them up to see what worked.

All said and done...the shoot took us about an hour and a half with all the bouncing around to different locations.

4. how did you decide what you wanted to wear? and the place of the shoot?
answered above...
thanks kelli you rock!

i asked chloe to share their engagement story and this is how it went.

Brent proposed to me on the 2 year anniversary of us meeting. We spent the day before at a water park in new braunfels (schlitterbahn) and the next day exploring Austin Texas and conoeing down the river in Zilker park. After we swam in the river and went back to the car he surprised me by pulling out a cute dress for me to wear to a fancy dinner, so i changed inside a gas station and he brought me to a candle light dinner at Houstons. Afterwerwards he told me he was going to bring me to get dessert so we went for a little drive and ended up at the top of Mount Bonnell in Austin. Brent had been timing the sunsets the week prior and so right at 8:15pm he started saying really sweet things and hugged me and I thought it was weird that he was shivering in the middle of August, but he was nervous and shaking and then I felt him put his hand in his jacket pocket and he got down on one knee and asked me to marry him. I didn't see it coming at all because the week before he tricked me and said he wanted to wait two years to get proposed, which i was super bummed out about but thought it was worth the wait hahah. Another funny thing is, he didn't know what size ring i wear and didn't want to get one too small so he got a size 6 ring and i wear size 4, so it was huuuge on me, but i thought it was really cute.

I agree super cute! thanks chloe bear! can't wait to come up and visit the nettles/halford and sebree's soon!

coconut records video contest.

i love coconut records music.
when i heard there was a music video contest i called my friend micah of serial box studios to see if he wanted to help with it. PROJECT! i love projects. he called back excited and brought our friends trey and ryan along for the fun. i told him to write down three songs he liked and i would do the same to decide on the perfect song. we both had the same song for our first choice and kinda told each other what we envisioned. so there you go. that was easy. we all wanted it to look like an old video (think wonder years). there was only 3 things i specified
1. campfire sesh
2. my uncle doing a handstand on a skateboard and us just hanging out skating.
3. and a lil shot of the barber shop that was in the movie rushmore. (by the way the owner of that barber shop was so rad. he even showed me on original board that he found)
the rest of the ideas came easy and it was awesome cause we all just fed off of eachother.

so i called my family up and asked them to come over for a grill out sesh and they were in. all i had to do was a lil decorating like.... made a teepee with random sheets and scraps that i had, used huge  stencils for the song title,  put up an old christmas tree that was lying in the back yard, hung knitted garland, played instruments, hung up lights and wore feathers. we just had the cameras rolling while we sang, danced, hung out, ate yummy grilled food. best night in a long time.
tee pee inspiration from rachels blog over at smile and wave. her's is legit!
next day we all went skating in the heights, got kicked off a highschool lawn. boo. super fun!great footage. some people couldnt come bc they had to work but thats ok. and jacob didnt get to skate with us bc he was off to atlanta with trav. next time, next video guys.

I hope that i get to do more projects with serial box and hopefully they will let me intern with them so i learn their mad editing skillz. trey, ryan, and micah thank you so much. y'all filmed & mashed this up just as i imagined it!
I hope you enjoy this video. please let me know what you think. if you have any questions just ask:)
